Over the years, Cheema has appreciated the benefits of generous community support from neighbors, businesses, and government agencies in our greater lakes community. This support has helped Cheema be both a successful provider of physically active programming, and a training center for a number of Canada’s elite canoe kayak athletes. In recognition of this support, the club looks for opportunities to give back to the community! Mark your calendars and join us for some fresh air, fall scenery, and a chance to stretch your legs along the shores and through the trails!
WE DID IT!! WE WON!!
NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 2013
CONGRATULATONS TO OUR COACHES AND ATHLETES
Annual Cheema Paddle-a-thon 2013
Despite the dark day and the forecast for afternoon showers, our summer paddlers took part in the 9th annual paddle-a-thon Friday, July 19th.
Thank you to all our summer coaches, Diana, Josh and Tyler too, for helping before, during and after the paddle-a-thon, helping with the paddle, collecting the paddler’s pledges, organizing the kids, getting them in their boats, helping with the bbq lunch and organizing the candy tosses.
The kids and coaches started their morning with an energizing Pep Rally by Liam Fair; if the smiles and dancing were any indication they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thanks to Liam the kids (and coaches) were warmed up and ready to paddle. Lake Thomas was awash in colorful canoes and kayaks – singles, crews, war canoes and dragon boat were all on the water. Most coaches were in safety boats, but some paddled in crew boats too. We were very lucky to have Michelle Russell and Connor Taras join in the fun that day, they paddled Cheema’s K4 with Thomas Miller and Kenny Williams.
Before the paddle was complete the heavens opened up, a very special thank you to Drew and Zolton for cooking all 221 hotdogs, IN THE RAIN, thank you Ian for all your help. A huge thank you to Emily Hayes, Emma Miller, Erin Donovan and Kady Leard for your help throughout the day, you were busy girls, coxing boats, moving the lunch inside and handing out hotdogs, jammers and freezies!
Thank you to everyone who has donated and gathered pledges, without your help this summer’s paddle-a-thon would not have been the success it has been, In the near future Cheema will have new summer program boats to put in our beautiful new boat house.
Congratulations to the U11 girls and their coaches, Emma, Lily and Kiera, they won the pizza party for the most pledges per paddler average. Congratulations to Carter Nickerson, U15, for winning the $50.00 gift card for the most pledges, he raised an amazing $600.00 in total.
You can now check out our 2013 Paddle-a-thon Sponsorship Awards on the Cheema web site (LINK), they are also posted at the club. Thank you for your generous pledges and support, Laurel Lea Nelson
