Year-Round Competitive Paddling

CHEEMA COMPETITIVE PADDLING PROGRAM

Cheema’s Competitive Paddling Program is focused on developing racers. The sub-groups (Train to Compete/TTC and Train to Win/TTW) are designed to offer two tiers for highly committed athletes to train full-time. Participation must be approved by a coach, or you must be invited by a coach.

Coaches will decide the best coaching and preparation situation and move athletes between groups based on the type of training and the desired results for a particular training phase. Paddlers in the Competitive Program will have access to supplemental sport science supports, gym access, swimming, and field house sessions.

Cheema expects great things from its coaches and to help them be their best, our coach to athlete ratios are set at approximately 1 coach to every 15 athletes. This is designed to ensure more individualized feedback and personalized training adaptations where necessary.

Fees for both programs are the same and include 12-months of programming and competition preparation. Monthly payments are possible. Competition opportunities are dictated by eligibility, qualification and the number of events held by our sport’s provincial governing body. Expenses for camps and competitions are not included.

Participants in this program will be provided with volunteer leadership opportunities and be considered for part-time summer program coaching as well as provided with educational opportunities.

  1. Developing High Performance / Train-to-Compete (TTC) - Once athletes graduate from the Learn to Train program and have the commitment and coach endorsement to move up, they will be ready for Cheema’s Train-to-Compete year-round program for U14, U16 and U18+ athletes. TTC is designed to teach athletes how to train effectively, fuel optimally, develop mental performance skills, compete, and improve overall performance. The program includes a more disciplined training program, with an introduction to swimming sessions, ski camps, Florida training camp (U16+), as well as participation at regional/national trials and the National Championships (qualifying standards must be achieved for Florida camp, trials and Nationals).

Participants will continue to build on technical, endurance, speed, and strength capabilities at a more committed level. The Train-to-Compete Program runs 7-8 training sessions a week. Practice durations and times can change throughout the year based on the group’s yearly training plan.

  2. High Performance / Train-to-Win (TTW) - Designated athletes (ages U16+) will be offered earned training opportunities at the highest level under the guidance of our senior coaches.  The discipline coaches will develop a Train-to-Win performance pathway for athletes showing the commitment and readiness needed at this level. Expectations are high requiring full participation in 8-9 weekly scheduled workouts and adherence to training and rest requirements. Preparation for local, national, and international competitions are incorporated into individualized athlete plans. Athletes may not attend this program on a part time basis except where provincial/national team training requirements are scheduled.
